About the Role
Reporting to the Underwriting Manager, the Underwriter role will support in assessing, evaluating, and underwriting general insurance risks in line with the Company’s underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and risk appetite. The role involves reviewing proposals, determining appropriate coverage terms and pricing, preparing quotations, and ensuring the accurate and timely issuance of policy documents. The Underwriter supports portfolio profitability and growth through sound risk assessment, effective stakeholder engagement, compliance with underwriting standards, and delivery of high-quality customer service.
PURPOSE:
To assess, evaluate, and underwrite General Insurance risks in accordance with company policies, underwriting guidelines, and regulatory requirements, ensuring appropriate risk selection, competitive pricing, accurate policy issuance, and sustainable portfolio profitability.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Risk Assessment & Underwriting
- Evaluate and underwrite General Insurance risks in accordance with the Company’s underwriting guidelines, risk appetite, regulatory requirements, and reinsurance arrangements.
- Review and analyze insurance proposals, risk information, survey reports, claims history, and supporting documentation for new business, renewals, and policy amendments.
- Assess the nature and extent of risk exposures and determine appropriate terms, conditions, premiums, deductibles, warranties, exclusions, and limits.
- Ensure prudent risk selection and maintain a balanced, profitable, and sustainable portfolio.
- Prepare competitive quotations for new and renewal business while safeguarding underwriting profitability.
- Provide recommendations on risk improvement measures to minimize loss exposure and enhance risk quality.
- Ensure all risks accepted fall within delegated underwriting authority limits and escalate exceptions for approval where necessary.
- Support the preparation and evaluation of tender and bid documents to secure quality business opportunities.
- Liaise with reinsurers on facultative placements and complex or high-value risks requiring additional underwriting support.
Portfolio Management & Profitability
- Monitor the performance of the underwriting portfolio and identify trends in claims experience, loss ratios, renewals, and risk concentrations.
- Analyze underwriting data and provide recommendations aimed at improving portfolio profitability and growth.
- Support business retention and acquisition initiatives through timely and responsive underwriting services.
- Review renewal accounts and recommend pricing, coverage modifications, and retention strategies.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of underwriting strategies to achieve business objectives and profitability targets.
- Identify emerging risks and market trends and recommend appropriate underwriting actions.
Policy Administration & Service Delivery
- Prepare, review, and issue quotations, policies, endorsements, certificates, schedules, and renewal documents within agreed service timelines.
- Ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance of all underwriting documentation and records.
- Maintain updated underwriting information within the core insurance management system.
- Manage policy renewals proactively and facilitate timely issuance of renewal terms before policy expiry.
- Ensure prompt issuance and delivery of policy documents to clients, brokers, and intermediaries.
- Monitor premium collections and support credit control initiatives to maintain debt levels within approved limits.
Compliance, Risk Governance & Controls
- Ensure all underwriting activities comply with company policies, regulatory requirements, insurance legislation, and industry best practices.
- Adhere to underwriting authority limits, risk acceptance standards, and internal control procedures.
- Identify, report, and escalate underwriting exceptions, unusual risks, and policy breaches in line with established governance frameworks.
- Support implementation of risk management initiatives that strengthen underwriting discipline and portfolio quality.
- Participate in internal and external audits by providing accurate underwriting documentation and information.
Customer Relationship & Stakeholder Management
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with brokers, agents, intermediaries, corporate clients, and internal stakeholders.
- Provide professional underwriting advice and technical support to the sales and business development teams.
- Respond promptly and effectively to underwriting enquiries, requests, and service-related concerns.
- Resolve customer and intermediary complaints in a timely manner while maintaining high standards of service excellence.
- Promote a customer-centric culture by delivering efficient, responsive, and value-added underwriting solutions.
Technical Support & Business Development
- Work closely with Business Development teams to identify opportunities for portfolio growth and business retention.
- Participate in client meetings, broker engagements, and business presentations where underwriting expertise is required.
- Provide technical input in the design, review, and enhancement of insurance products and underwriting processes.
- Share market intelligence and competitor insights to support strategic decision-making and product innovation.
- Support organization-wide initiatives aimed at enhancing underwriting efficiency and operational excellence.
Teamwork & Continuous Improvement
- Collaborate effectively with Claims, Finance, Reinsurance, Risk, Compliance, and Business Development teams to ensure seamless service delivery.
- Mentor and support junior staff, interns, and new team members on underwriting policies and procedures.
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives that enhance underwriting efficiency, service quality, and operational effectiveness.
- Recommend enhancements to underwriting guidelines, workflows, and risk assessment frameworks in line with changing market conditions and emerging risks.
- Participate actively in training, professional development, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
Who We’re Looking For
Academic & Professional Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Banking & insurance, Actuarial Science or a related field.
- Professional insurance qualification such as ACII, CII, Diploma in Insurance is an added advantage.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Underwriting.
